Developing: Search resumes for missing fisherman off Whangārei coast at Pataua South

KEYPOINTS

Search crews are resuming the search for a man believed to be missing in the sea in Northland.

The 17-foot (5-metre) runabout was taken out for fishing off the coast near Whangārei and meant to return at 7pm on Friday. The alarm was raised at 9pm.

On Sunday morning, the search resumed for the missing man, supported by the Police National Dive Squad, Search and Rescue crews, Auckland Coastguard Air Patrol, Auckland Police Maritime Unit, Customs, Surf Rescue and Northland Land Search and Rescue.

Police have scaled back the search for the missing Pataua South fisherman after four days of extensive sea, air and shoreline efforts, though daily shoreline checks will continue. Authorities thank the community for its support and urge the public to report anything unusual in the water.

A large-scale search by sea and air is ongoing, along with searches of the shoreline. The Royal New Zealand Navy has kindly offered to assist in the search today.
