Eight years on, the Dickey Semifly 36 still proves the point

New Zealand’s marine industry is beginning to find its feet after a tough early-2020s economic downturn. Like anyone serious about the New Zealand marine sector, we take real pleasure in acknowledging the successes of local boat builders.

Just before Christmas, Dickey Boats handed over a newly built Semifly 36. It is not a new model. The Semifly 36 was launched in 2017. Boating New Zealand reviewed it soon after, noting the quality of its construction and the confidence it inspired on the water. Eight years on, its lines still look good and have carried through the years well.

The 36 is a direct evolution of the Semifly 32 and carries the same hull form. Increased fuel capacity extends the boat’s range. The larger cockpit, fishing station, and saloon contribute to more enjoyable coastal and offshore adventures.

The boat review version was powered by a single Volvo Penta D6 400. Today, that installation would likely be replaced with a more modern package, but the underlying idea remains the same. Head off on an adventure with invited guests in a boat that delivers a calm, smooth ride, then relax knowing it will cope comfortably with whatever conditions are encountered.

In 2021, a further conversation with Boating New Zealand shifted the focus to the technologies that sit behind the appearance. CAD-driven design, CNC-cut alloy construction, digital switching, and modern power systems are now essential for boats expected to travel further and do so with ease. In 2023, Dickey Boats even flirted with a light blue or teal hull colour for the 36.

Technology’s the driver

Nearly a decade on from its initial launch, the Semifly 36 remains a boat to watch. We look forward to seeing where the next hull number finds its home.
