Simrad AutoCaptain wins 2026 CES Picks Award for autonomous boating breakthrough

Simrad Marine Electronics has been awarded a 2026 CES Picks Award in the TWICE Picks category for its Simrad AutoCaptain autonomous boating system, recognising a major step forward in recreational marine technology.

The CES Picks Awards celebrate standout innovation showcased at CES, judged by an expert editorial panel. AutoCaptain was recognised for delivering full auto docking capability, including docking, undocking, and precise short range manoeuvring, in a commercially available system.

AutoCaptain marks a significant milestone in autonomous boating. Using real time 360 degree situational awareness, the system autonomously manages low speed manoeuvres in tight marinas and challenging conditions. It continuously compensates for wind, current, and nearby obstacles, while keeping the skipper firmly in command at the helm.

Unlike systems that depend on GPS waypoints or previously mapped locations, AutoCaptain operates anywhere. When arriving at a new marina or unfamiliar berth, the system dynamically adapts to the environment in real time. It can also hold the vessel securely against the dock, allowing crew to prepare lines and fenders without pressure.

Developed in close collaboration with Mercury Marine, AutoCaptain integrates directly with Mercury’s advanced propulsion systems and joystick controls. A network of cameras, real time processing, and monitoring through a Simrad display delivers a single, unified control experience. As a factory integrated solution, AutoCaptain preserves vessel design while offering precision and ease that aftermarket systems cannot match.

AutoCaptain is built as a scalable platform, designed to support future enhancements as autonomous capability evolves. It is currently available on select Boston Whaler 405 Conquest models, with wider boatbuilder availability planned.

The CES Picks Awards editorial team noted that the 2026 winners represent technology capable of transforming industries, highlighting innovation, ingenuity, and real world application.
