2026 SailGP Auckland Race 1: Australia strikes first

A compressed start, costly penalties, and a composed Australian finish set the tone on Waitematā Harbour.

SailGP Auckland Race 1 opened with the fleet tightly bunched and closed with Australia firmly in control.

The F50s crossed the start line shortly after 4.13pm in a congested and aggressive approach to the first mark. Multiple protests were lodged in the opening exchanges. Umpires reviewed the incidents and, in most cases, allowed racing to continue without penalty.

At Mark 1, separation was measured in fractions. Australia rounded within a second of the lead, with Denmark and New Zealand immediately alongside. Italy and Spain remained in close contact. The fleet stayed compressed through Mark 2, where New Zealand trailed the leader by just 0.6 seconds. France, Denmark and Spain followed within two seconds. Italy remained within three.

New Zealand found itself fleetingly in the lead. With points lost in the Perth event they have much to make up. Then Australia took the lead back, and began to extend.

Penalties and boundary calls proved decisive across the fleet. Canada received a penalty for failing to give mark room to Switzerland, costing valuable metres and momentum. Sweden incurred a boundary infringement after sailing outside course limits. The United States carried an earlier penalty, while Great Britain featured in multiple protests that did not result in sanctions.

New Zealand’s race unfolded in two phases. The Black Foils matched the leaders through the opening gates and demonstrated competitive pace. Mid race, they slipped down the order after a costly sequence that disrupted their rhythm. The crew stabilised quickly, rebuilding position and returning to contention. By Mark 4, they had closed to within 1.6 seconds of the lead. Ultimately, they secured third place and banked crucial points.

Australia claimed SailGP Auckland Race 1 in 9 minutes 16.144 seconds, executing a controlled and error free performance. France finished second, 18.3 seconds behind, delivering a consistent and disciplined race. Spain placed fourth, followed by Germany and Denmark.

SailGP Auckland Race 1 underlined the importance of precision in confined waters. Clean manoeuvres and boundary awareness proved decisive. Australia set the early benchmark. France confirmed their sharpness. New Zealand demonstrated resilience.

Race 2 will determine who can maintain that standard under increasing pressure.
