The 59th Governor’s Cup International Youth Match Racing Championship heads to Balboa Yacht Club, Newport Beach, from July 27 to August 1 with no clear favourite for the first time in five years. Recent dominant forces Jeffrey Petersen, Cole Tapper and Jordan Stevenson have all aged out, leaving the door open for a new generation.
The following is summarised from Ken Sherb’s article, 2026 Governor’s Cup: No Clear Favorites for First Time in Five Year.
The 12-team field is led by the top three World Sailing Youth Match Racing rankings: Ethan Fong (NZL), Daniel Kemp (AUS) and Josh Hyde (NZL), who reached the semis in 2025. Australia and New Zealand have five representatives in total, reflecting a fiercely competitive selection process that drew more than 30 invitation requests for 11 spots.
American Christian Prendergast, ranked 10th on the open world rankings, is a standout. He has also been invited to the Congressional Cup next month, a rare dual campaign. Seventeen-year-old Siena Nichols, sailing her third GovCup for host club BYC, is ranked sixth in the world and has already earned the nickname “the teenage assassin” from fellow competitors.
Racing will be sailed in identical GC22 sloops, designed by BYC Staff Commodore Alan Andrews, regarded as one of the best youth match racing boats in the world.
The Governor’s Cup is the oldest youth match racing championship in the world. Its alumni include two-time America’s Cup winner James Spithill, and World Match Racing Tour champions Taylor Canfield, Phil Robertson and Nick Egnot-Johnson.
