Auckland Transport is planning repair works at Sandspit Wharf after inspections revealed deterioration in several structural elements beneath the deck, including piles and braces.
Temporary vehicle restrictions have been put in place on part of the wharf while the repair plan is finalised. Pedestrian access remains open and ferry services continue to operate, but heavy vehicles including fuel tankers are affected by the restrictions.
Repair works are expected to begin in July, though the timeline depends on weather, final scope and material availability. AT says some materials are proving difficult to source, which may mean the work needs to be carried out in stages.
Some maintenance was completed at the wharf in 2022, including new stair sets, additional piles and bearers, brace replacements and pile grouting. However, several piles have deteriorated more quickly than anticipated, particularly over the past 18 months. Those piles can no longer be grouted and are now considered end of life.
AT’s current approach involves fully rebuilding the most affected section of the wharf head and replacing a significant number of surrounding components. The goal is to avoid the need for further major works within the next two to five years.
New stair design open for feedback
As part of the project, AT is also proposing a change to the staircase at the wharf head. Rather than replacing the existing large staircase like for like, the plan is to install two separate stairways with a central handrail, removing the inner section of stairs. AT says the design would be more practical, durable and cost-effective to maintain. Based on community feedback at a drop-in session held on 4 June, the stairs are likely to be 1650mm wide.
Anyone who wants to comment on the stair design can email ATengagement@at.govt.nz (ref: Sandspit Wharf stair design) or leave a comment on the AT website by Wednesday 24 June 2026.
