Bay of Islands Sailing Week calls for volunteers ahead of AGM

Written by

Bay of Islands Sailing Week is holding its 2026 AGM on Tuesday 4 August, 6pm, online via Zoom. Anyone with a connection to the regatta, sailors, volunteers, sponsors, or supporters, is welcome to join, and organisers are especially keen to hear from anyone interested in joining the committee.

On the agenda: the Chairperson’s and Financial Reports, committee elections, and early plans for 2027. A new chairperson and treasurer both came on board within weeks of each other ahead of the 2026 event, then the secretary’s role fell vacant just three weeks out from race week. Race Committee chair Andrew Kearney absorbed the extra work, and the rest of the volunteer committee covered the gap to keep the regatta on track.

That’s not a small ask. Bay of Islands Sailing Week is run entirely by volunteers, more than 60 of them each year, covering everything from race management, safety boats and mark laying on the water to logistics, social events and infrastructure ashore. Kearney, speaking ahead of the 2026 event, put it plainly: “We do it for the entrants. It’s a big commitment for them to come, and as long as they want us to keep doing it, we’ll endeavour to do so. Without the committee and volunteers, delivering a stand-alone event like this would not be possible.”

Anyone interested in attending the AGM or joining the committee can get in touch directly at media@boisailingweek.org.nz.
