New Zealand rowers training abroad now have a clear pathway to stay connected with the national programme, with Rowing New Zealand opening nominations for its 2026/2027 International Pathway scheme.
The programme is designed for athletes who’ve chosen to develop their skills overseas, whether at university in the United States, United Kingdom, or Australia, or through club rowing abroad. Rather than cutting ties with domestic selection, the International Pathway keeps them on RNZ’s radar and provides structured support as they work toward future national team opportunities.
Getting on the scheme is straightforward for those with recent trial exposure. Any athlete who attended 2026 Age Group Team Trials (U19, U23, or World University level) qualifies automatically. For others, the bar involves either hitting specific erg standards or posting strong results at domestic regattas.
Incoming freshmen need to nail one on-water benchmark and one erg requirement. Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors face a stiffer ask: both erg standards must be met. The on-water credentials come from top-four finishes in singles or top-two finishes in doubles across the major domestic championships—SICC, NICC, NZCC, NZSS, and NZ Universities. The erg thresholds are pitched at the National Pathway level, measured between October 2025 and April 2026.

Once selected, athletes aren’t left to fend for themselves. RNZ provides regular check-ins via email and Zoom, individual development plans tailored to each rower, and ongoing liaison with university coaches in their adopted countries. The intention is to keep the organisation connected to its offshore talent while those athletes pursue their studies and local rowing.
Come autumn, the expectations kick in. Participants must submit two 2-kilometre erg tests and two 5km or 6km tests between 1 October 2026 and 1 April 2027, depending on their chosen programme. For those eyeing the 2027 U23 team, one of each test will align with RNZ’s official High Performance Selection Guidelines dates, streamlining the pathway toward national selection.
Nominations close on 16 August 2026. Athletes who attended the U23 trial earlier this year can skip the nomination form, but everyone else must apply. The window for submitting erg scores from the previous season also closes that same Sunday for anyone who didn’t post their 2km and 5km or 6km times last year.
It’s a practical scheme that acknowledges where New Zealand rowing talent lives these days: spread across the globe, training hard, and keen to represent their country when the moment comes.
