Mount Gay returns to North Sails Cowes Week as the hunt for the iconic Red Hat begins

Written by

The Red Hat sits in a yacht club somewhere, perched on a shelf or tucked into a locker. Someone earned it at Cowes, and they’ll never quite explain how. There are no entry forms, no published rules, no official announcement when one changes hands. It simply appears, year after year, as Cowes Week’s most coveted prize.

For the 200th running of the regatta, Mount Gay Rum returns as Official Rum Partner for a fifth consecutive year, and with it comes the annual hunt for the legendary Red Hat. First awarded at the Admiral’s Cup in 1983, the distinctive red cap has transcended sponsorship trinket to become what Robert Trimble, Chairman of Cowes Combined Clubs, calls “one of sailing’s most iconic symbols.” Trimble notes that while some trophies get won on the racecourse, others earn their status ashore. The Red Hat belongs squarely in the latter category.

The appeal lies partly in the mystery. Throughout the week, a limited number of Red Hats will be distributed each day from the Mount Gay Rum Shack at Cowes Yacht Haven. There’s no roadmap. You can’t enter a draw or complete a form. You simply turn up to the après-sail celebrations, join in the Bajan-inspired games and challenges, grab a drink with fellow competitors, and if fortune smiles, you might leave with something no amount of money can buy.

Maud Tsassis, Mount Gay’s Brand Manager, frames the cap as more than merchandise. She describes it as “a badge of honour, a shared accomplishment within the global sailing community.” For Mount Gay, the connection runs deeper than commercial arrangement. The brand’s heritage is genuinely intertwined with sailing culture, and that relationship shows in how seriously they take Cowes. This year, marking the regatta’s bicentenary, feels particularly significant.

The Rum Shack itself has become embedded in Cowes Week’s rhythm. Sailors drift in after racing, salt-stained and tired, looking for the Eclipse Black & Stormy that’s become the traditional racer’s drink. Others hunt down frozen Piña Coladas, Strawberry Daiquiris, or the Captain’s Triple Rum Punch. This year brings a new exclusive: Mount Gay Bajan Spiced Rum, made in Barbados with all-natural ingredients. It’s the kind of detail that matters to people who care about where their drink comes from.

What makes Mount Gay’s presence work at Cowes isn’t the merchandise or even the rum itself. It’s that the brand understands what sailors actually want from an après-race experience: a place to decompress, share stories from the day’s racing, and mark moments of real accomplishment. The Red Hat, awarded at random, asks nothing of competitors except that they show up and be part of the crowd. There’s something refreshingly honest about that.
