The Lake Brunner Classic Boat Gathering returns to Moana, on the West Coast, from 9 to 11 October 2026. Now in its seventh year, the event has grown from a modest local meet into a fixture on the region’s boating calendar, drawing craft from across the South Island each October.
Classic boats from every era are welcome at Lake Brunner
The gathering’s appeal lies in its open door to the fleet. Powered boats spanning six decades attend, from 1920s originals through to 1970s retros and 1980s classics, under an unofficial rule that owners simply “run what you’ve got”, whether that’s an untouched original, a careful restoration, a replica or a maintained retro. All generations of boatie are welcome, and the weekend leans as heavily on shared knowledge and boating banter as it does on the boats themselves.
What a weekend at the Lake Brunner gathering looks like
The format has settled into a familiar rhythm over the gathering’s history. Boats traditionally launch from the Moana main boat ramp on the Saturday morning, with a poker run around the lake and a beach lunch to follow, weather permitting. Saturday evening brings a nautical-themed dinner and prize giving at Hotel Lake Brunner, the settlement’s longstanding social hub, before a closing lake cruise on the Sunday.
Lake Brunner is the West Coast’s largest lake, reached via Arthur’s Pass on SH73 or as a stop on the TranzAlpine scenic rail line, roughly three hours from Christchurch by road.
Jet Boating heritage trust backs this year’s Lake Brunner gathering
This year’s gathering carries the support of the Jet Boating New Zealand Heritage Trust, alongside Character Boats & Marine New Zealand and other regional sponsors. Registration details are available through the event’s own channels ahead of October.
