Last chance to discover the remarkable story of Mighty Mary

Written by

The remarkable story of New Zealand sailor Leslie Egnot and the women who challenged America’s Cup history comes to Takapuna on Tuesday, 3 November.
There’s still time to secure tickets for Mighty Mary, the acclaimed documentary screening at Takapuna Beachside Cinemas this Tuesday, 3 November, in support of the New Zealand Sailing Trust.
The film revisits one of the America’s Cup’s most extraordinary campaigns. In 1995, a crew of women led by New Zealand skipper Leslie Egnot took on the established names of international sailing, including Dennis Conner.

A remarkable chapter in America’s Cup history

As Boating New Zealand reported earlier this month, the Mighty Mary campaign began with an advertisement in The New York Times, attracting women from across the United States.
The crew brought together Olympic sailors, rowers and athletes from diverse backgrounds. They proved they could compete with the best, beating Conner’s Stars & Stripes in a crucial race before a controversial agreement changed the competition’s outcome.
For New Zealand audiences, Egnot’s story is particularly special. Raised in Christchurch, she won Olympic silver alongside Jan Shearer in the women’s 470 class at Barcelona in 1992. Three years later, she was at the helm of one of sailing’s most talked about campaigns.
Directed by Olympic rower and filmmaker Mary Mazzio, and narrated by Hugh Jackman and Elizabeth Banks, Mighty Mary brings that extraordinary campaign back into the spotlight.
