# A Relaxed Cruise Through Moreton Bay

Ten Maritimo yachts and around 40 owners recently discovered why Queensland’s Moreton Bay remains one of Australia’s most rewarding cruising grounds. The late-August muster proved that the best boating experiences don’t always require a long offshore passage or complicated planning, especially when protected waterways and island anchorages sit just a few hours from the coast.

For Gold Coast-based cruisers, Moreton Bay offers something increasingly rare in modern boating: the chance to explore without sacrifice. Protected waters alternate with broad anchorages. Short passages connect to beach landings. A long weekend feels like considerably more once the marina disappears astern.

Grant Binskin, Maritimo’s Retail Marketing Consultant, noted that roughly 70 per cent of the muster participants were new to the company’s gatherings. “It was the perfect number to have a nice celebration, a terrific party, but also not so big that you don’t get to meet and chat with everybody,” he said. That mix of established owners and fresh faces shaped the entire trip.

The route itself demonstrated the region’s appeal. Rather than beginning with a long coastal run, boats gathered progressively as they moved north along the Gold Coast, with timing arranged around the tide-sensitive shallows near Jacobs Well. Once through, the fleet settled into an easy passage toward Southern Moreton Bay, where confined waterways suddenly open to broad expanses, islands, and sheltered anchorages.

Peel Island served as the first stop. Binskin recalled: “We dropped anchor and a few people took their tenders in and we just caught up on the beach and got our feet wet, which was nice. Nothing really formal set up there, but that was a good chance to kind of say hello to a few new faces.” That informality proved essential. For cruising owners, these anchorages offer the freedom to pause for an hour or two, explore by tender, and move on when the mood takes you, rather than treating every stop as a major destination.

From Peel Island, the group pressed on to Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island, anchoring in protected water south of the vehicle ferry. An early arrival gave owners time to settle in before heading ashore. The Little Ship Club, looking west across the bay, hosted Maritimo’s marquee, food platters, and an informal afternoon gathering. “They really did a great job for us,” Binskin said. “We had some really delicious platters of food coming out for us, and we had a bar tab there as well. We had a really enjoyable afternoon just relaxing, and watching the sun come down over the bay.”

When overnight wind increased conditions in the outer bay, the planned route already pointed toward shelter. The fleet lifted anchor at 8am and headed back toward South Stradbroke Island’s Dux Anchorage, Southport Yacht Club’s remote-feeling island haven. “Luckily for us we were heading back down through the bay, into the Gold Coast Broadwater where it’s more protected,” Binskin explained. “So, we were able to make the best of the weather, even though it turned a little bit sour.”

By late morning, boats were anchored, tenders deployed, and owners moving freely between vessel and shore. A marquee lunch with tropical theming encouraged Hawaiian shirts, and the afternoon dissolved into that unhurried pace that defines good cruising. Simple dinner followed: Maritimo staff cooked sausages as a large screen flickered football highlights and a bonfire drew conversation.

“It was a lovely way to enjoy the night, and gave people something to focus on and talk about,” Binskin reflected. “There were a number of footy fans there, and others who were just there to have a beer and hang around by the fire. So, it was a good mix.”

That flexibility, whether responding to weather or simply choosing between the bonfire and the screen, captured what makes Moreton Bay’s cruising grounds special. The best days shift easily from passage to anchorage, tender to shore, and back to the comfort of your own yacht. For owners wanting rewarding cruising without the formality or distance that offshore passages demand, this part of Queensland delivers exactly that.
