Race 2: Orient Express Racing vs. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli

In a highly anticipated race, the Italian team delivered a commanding performance against their French rivals, who struggled from the start. The result was a decisive victory for Italy, showcasing their prowess while raising questions about France’s future in the competition.

The race began with a significant setback for the French team, as just before the start they incurred a boundary penalty, fractionally exiting the bounded race area. They then had to remain behind for an additional 75 metres to compensate, placing them immediately at a disadvantage. In contrast, the Italian team, widely regarded as the top contender, went into full competition mode and seized the opportunity to establish an early lead.

As the race progressed into the first leg, Italy continued to assert their dominance. To maximise their lead, the Italians tacked frequently and by the time Italy rounded the first mark at 3 minutes, 24 seconds they were a clear 100 metres ahead of the French, who rounded the mark 14 seconds later.

Italy’s strategy of pushing the French team from ahead and forcing tactical decisions contributed to their growing lead. By the end of the first leg, the Italians were firmly in control, with a 100-metre advantage that continued to expand.

Entering the second leg, Italy further extended their lead significantly. By the midpoint of this leg, the Italian team was 500 metres ahead of their French competitors, who were clearly struggling to keep pace. The Italians rounded the second gate at 6 minutes, 36 seconds, with the French trailing 27 seconds behind. Despite their efforts, the French team could not close the gap and remained approximately 300 metres behind as both teams moved into the third leg.

The third leg of the race saw both teams travelling at impressive speeds of around 30 knots, despite the relatively light 8-knot wind. Italy, however, maintained its slight edge, increasing their lead to 400 metres. As Italy crossed the third gate at 10 minutes, 48 seconds, the French team lagged 38 seconds behind. As the race progressed the French kept loosing ground, falling further and further behind.

By the fourth leg, Italy had established a formidable 500-metre lead. Both boats continued to race at high speeds of approximately 30 knots, but the Italians’ consistent performance and tactical superiority ensured that they did not lose their advantage. Despite the French team’s best efforts to close the gap, which they did slightly, they stayed well behind. Orient Express rounded the fourth gate 450 metres⏤40 seconds⏤after the Italian boat’s time of 14 minutes, 23 seconds.

As the race approached the final leg, there was no chance the French would catch up to the Italians. With Italy maintaining a 350-metre lead halfway through leg 5 and displaying no signs of slowing down, it became clear that only a major mishap could alter the outcome. The Italians crossed the final gate at 18 minutes and 41 seconds, well ahead of the French, who passed the same gate 37 seconds later.

Italy’s performance was a testament to their exceptional tactical and strategic awareness and skills. Their untarnished record in the semi-finals underscores their dominance, positioning them as formidable title contenders. For France, however, the race was a setback that will undoubtedly prompt concern. Currently languishing at the bottom of the standings among the six teams, the French team must reassess their strategy and performance if they hope to avoid elimination.

This race not only highlighted Italy’s strength but also cast a shadow over France’s prospects⏤don’t forget one team goes home at the end of this week. As the semi-finals progress, all eyes will be on how the French team responds to this defeat and whether they can mount a comeback to secure their place in the final stages of the competition. For now, Italy’s victory stands as a resounding affirmation of their current dominance in the sport.
