The Buckland Beach Yacht Club (BBYC) is marking a momentous milestone this year as it celebrates its 75th Jubilee. The club, established in 1949, has a rich history of fostering a passion for sailing across generations, and its upcoming Jubilee Regatta promises to be a highlight of the sailing calendar.

Following the initial anniversary race held last Saturday, where challenging weather conditions tested the mettle of sailors, the club is gearing up for another significant event. The 75th Jubilee Regatta will take place on September 21st, 2024, as part of a series of celebrations recognizing 75 years of sailing success. This prestigious event will showcase a broad fleet of vessels, from keel boats to youth centreboarders, in a true display of the club’s diverse sailing community.

Last Weekend’s Race: Stormy, Challenging, and Memorable

The first anniversary race, held last Saturday, set the stage for what has been described as an “epic” day on the water. Though the weather conditions were dark, stormy, and daunting, they couldn’t dampen the spirits of the sailors. Shots taken from the BBYC deck depict a dramatic scene, with boats battling through the rising sea and stiff breeze. The race started under the watchful eye of the race starter, and sailors fought their way against the tide with skill and determination.

“The weather on race day was abysmal, with a rising sea and a stiff breeze, but a dedicated crew of salty sailors took to the water to mark the special occasion,” said Vaughan Hunt, BBYC’s Commodore. “They were rewarded with a great race on the water and great fun back in the Clubroom after the race concluded.”

A sense of camaraderie and excitement filled the air, as seasoned sailors and youth participants alike navigated the treacherous conditions. The keel boat fleet remained steadfast, while the youth centreboarders added to the excitement, demonstrating the club’s commitment to fostering young talent. Even windsurfing legend Bruce Kendall made a special guest appearance, riding the waves on his beloved windsurfer, dressed as a pirate, to add some flair to the celebration.

Feedback from the Racing WhatsApp group captured the intensity of the day:

  • “Beating up the river against the tide looked like it rewarded boats that can point and skippers that know where the shallow water is…‘Oliver Sudden’ was so close to Grangers Point, I felt I could have jumped aboard!”
  • “Epic race – heaps of fun and a great way to mark the occasion.”

Looking Ahead to the 75th Jubilee Regatta

The upcoming 75th Jubilee Regatta on September 21st promises to build on the excitement and community spirit of last weekend’s race. The celebration doesn’t end there, as BBYC also has another regatta scheduled for September 29th to mark the opening of the new sailing season. This event will continue to highlight the club’s enduring legacy and its vibrant sailing community.

As BBYC sails into its 75th year, these events reflect the club’s legacy of adventure, competition, and celebration. The Jubilee Regatta will bring together sailors of all ages and abilities to participate in a day of thrilling racing and camaraderie. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a newcomer to the sport, BBYC’s 75th anniversary festivities offer an opportunity to witness and be part of a historic moment in New Zealand sailing.
