Race 4: Italy Surges to Victory in a Thrilling Foiling Duel

It was a race defined by razor-thin margins and heart-stopping moments as Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team clinched a spectacular win in Race 4 of the Youth America’s Cup. In a fleet of world-class competitors, Luna Rossa proved once again why they’re the team to beat, edging out Great Britain in a breathtaking finish.

Before the race even began, the left side of the course promised better conditions, while Luna Rossa chose the opposite, sticking to the right side of the starting line. In a dramatic opening, the USA lodged a protest, but no penalties were given, and the race was on.

Great Britain stormed into an early lead, but Italy stayed hot on their heels, trading positions in a close battle. Halfway through the first leg, the USA made a bold move and surged to the front. Yet, this was no runaway. The competition remained fierce, with less than 50 metres separating the top five boats. Only Alinghi of Switzerland fell far behind, struggling to keep pace.

By the first gate, the Brits regained control, rounding the mark first, followed closely by Luna Rossa. The two teams were setting the pace, with Luna Rossa only seconds behind. But it was far from smooth sailing for anyone. As the boats hit speeds nearing 40 knots down the second leg, Luna Rossa closed the gap, putting immense pressure on Great Britain.

A costly mistake by Great Britain—losing crucial momentum when their boat touched the water—allowed Luna Rossa to surge ahead. In a critical moment, Italy pulled off a flawless tack, extending their lead to 75 metres by the second gate.

As the teams sailed upwind, Luna Rossa and Great Britain were neck and neck, sailing side by side in a tense duel. Any slip could be the difference between victory and defeat. GBR mounted a spirited comeback, trailing by just 5 metres, but Luna Rossa made the decisive move, pulling away and rounding the third gate with a narrow 3-second lead.

In contrast, the USA’s hopes sank after a costly error left them struggling to regain their foils. They fell nearly 1.5 kilometres behind the pack, their race effectively over.

As the final leg approached, Luna Rossa stretched their lead to 180 metres, while GBR could do little but chase. Meanwhile, the battle for third place between France’s Orient Express Team Racing (FRA) and Emirates Team New Zealand raged on, with both teams locked in a close contest.

At over 40 knots, Luna Rossa stormed towards the finish line, executing their final tack with precision to cross the line first at 15 minutes and 41 seconds, a comfortable 12 seconds ahead of Great Britain. Orient Express secured third, finishing over a minute behind Luna Rossa, with ETNZ hot on their heels, just 5 seconds behind.

The final results put Luna Rossa at the top of the leaderboard with 33 points, further solidifying their status as the team to beat. Great Britain remains their closest competitor with 29 points, while New Zealand holds steady in third with 18 points.

As the teams prepare for the next race, the spotlight is firmly on Luna Rossa, who have displayed an unparalleled mastery of these 40-foot foiling boats. Yet, with Group A set to race again, and Group B waiting in the wings, anything could happen.

“It’s far from over,” one race official remarked. “Italy may be leading, but in this kind of racing, a single error can change everything.”

For now, Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli reign supreme, but the next leg of the Youth America’s Cup promises more high-octane action on the water.
