Sweden Takes Bold Step Towards Green Maritime Future with Artemis’ Electric Pilot Boat

Most recently we have heard the company name Artemis in association with the Youth and Women’s America’s Cup where they so strongly supported the Swedish teams in their endeavors, but Artemis Technologies is a world leader in maritime innovation, dedicated to creating zero-emission, high-performance vessels. Their cutting-edge eFoiler technology lifts the vessel’s hull above the water using hydrofoils, dramatically reducing drag and energy consumption. This breakthrough allows the EF-12 to operate at higher speeds with far less power compared to conventional vessels. The result is an ultra-efficient, smooth ride that produces virtually no noise or water disturbance, making it ideal for environmentally sensitive areas.

Hydrofoil technology has been used in racing yachts and commercial ferries, but applying it to workboats like the EF-12 marks a significant evolution in its use. The hydrofoil wings, submerged underwater, generate lift, much like an aircraft wing, elevating the boat above the water’s surface. This minimises wave impact and wake, a key benefit for Sweden’s busy shipping lanes and delicate marine ecosystems.

This partnership also represents Sweden’s commitment to sustainable maritime transport, aligning with its Fossil-Free Sweden Initiative and broader climate policies. As the world faces increasing environmental pressures, Sweden’s move towards electric vessels underscores the need for innovation in the marine industry.

Dr Iain Percy, CEO of Artemis Technologies, praised the collaboration, stating, “The Artemis EF-12 Pilot boat will not only be emission-free but will deliver the high performance, reliability, and efficiency needed for such a critical function.”

The introduction of the EF-12 marks a critical shift for Sweden’s maritime sector, demonstrating how modern technology can reduce emissions while maintaining operational effectiveness. As more countries seek to decarbonise their marine industries, the electric hydrofoil pilot boat may be a blueprint for future sustainable maritime operations worldwide.

Why Hydrofoils Matter:

  • Efficiency: Hydrofoils reduce drag by lifting the boat out of the water, allowing it to achieve higher speeds with less energy.
  • Eco-Friendly: With zero emissions and reduced wake, hydrofoil boats minimise their environmental footprint.
  • Cutting-Edge Tech: Combining electric power with hydrofoils represents the next generation of sustainable marine transport.

Sweden’s commitment to greener shipping is clear, and the Artemis EF-12 is poised to lead the way towards a future of cleaner, quieter, and more efficient waterways.
