Pre-Trade Courses Starting in February

For those ready to take the plunge, MAST Academy offers a range of pre-trade courses, with the next course beginning in February. These courses are an excellent way for young people to gain the foundational skills needed for a career in the marine and composites trades. If you’re not sure what you want to do after school but love working with your hands and have a passion for boats and the outdoors, this could be the perfect path for you. Visit our Pre trades course page today for more information.

Taste of Marine Trades

The first step in MAST’s pre-trade pathway is the Taste of Marine Trades course, which kicks off at the Westgate campus in Auckland in February 2025. This hands-on, practical programme provides learners with the opportunity to try their hand at various areas within the marine industry. From power tool use and mechanical equipment operation to learning about the materials used in boat building—timbers, alloys, and composite technologies—the course covers a wide range of skills. For those drawn to marine systems and engineering, there is also a component on systems repair and maintenance.

Building a Future in Boat Building or Composites

After completing the introductory Taste of Marine Trades, learners can further specialise by enrolling in either an Introduction to Boat Building or Introduction to Composites. These 12-week courses will solidify your skill set, opening up even more opportunities to secure an apprenticeship. Throughout the course, you’ll be introduced to industry employers, visit real marine workplaces, and build the communication and teamwork skills necessary for a successful career.

Your Path to an Apprenticeship

All pre-trade courses are supported by employers and include credits that lead toward a full apprenticeship. As you gain practical skills, you’ll also develop the confidence to thrive in the marine industry. Whether you’re interested in becoming an outboard service technician, a specialist in wooden, alloy, or composite boat building, or another role within this dynamic field, MAST Academy’s courses will give you the tools to succeed.

If this sounds like the career path for you, be sure to come and see us at the Maritime Festival for more information or visit our website to explore the possibilities!
