“It’s fantastic to see such a strong turnout,” said Peter Busfield, NZ Marine executive director. “This is the largest gathering of superyacht attendees in the Southern Hemisphere, underscoring New Zealand’s growing appeal as a refit and cruising destination.”
A Season of Opportunity
This year, 50 superyachts are visiting New Zealand, and nearly 40 were represented at the event. Attendees enjoyed award-winning local wines, networking, and discussions on cruising and work tips. For Captain Gerhard of the 86-metre yacht S/Y Aquijo, the appeal of New Zealand lies in the exceptional quality of refits and the transparency of services.
“We’re demanding of shipyards,” he explained. “Having experienced facilities in the US and Europe, I can confidently say the structuring and invoicing here are fantastic.”
The event reflects the culmination of years of industry investment. Initiatives such as the release of the Destination & Cruising New Zealand guide in Barcelona, the Millennium Cup regatta, and expanded shipyard capabilities have significantly elevated New Zealand’s profile on the global stage.
Economic Windfall
The superyacht industry continues to make waves in New Zealand’s economy. Visiting yachts contributed $212 million last year, with new builds adding another $250 million. A report commissioned by NZ Marine highlighted the vital role superyachts play in boosting both the marine and tourism industries in a nation of just five million people.
Busfield sees tremendous potential for growth. “New Zealand attracts only a fraction of the world’s superyacht fleet, despite offering 15,000 kilometres of untouched coastline and world-leading marine innovation,” he said.
Building for the Future
In the past five years, infrastructure investments have prepared New Zealand to handle a 50% increase in superyacht arrivals. Facilities are now equipped to service the world’s largest cruising yachts, as they venture beyond traditional waters like the Mediterranean and Caribbean into the South Pacific.
The collaboration between local companies and international yachts has fostered innovation. From engineering and provisioning to crew recruitment and refit services, the industry’s reach extends well beyond the dock.
A Summer of Adventures
As the sun set over the Hauraki Gulf, the function came to a close, but the summer season is just beginning. With an array of adventures awaiting in New Zealand’s pristine cruising grounds, the superyacht industry remains a shining example of what Kiwi expertise and collaboration can achieve on a global scale.
