Honouring a Sailor’s Legacy: Remembering Mark Gibbs

The sailing community is mourning the loss of Mark Gibbs, a past Commodore and inspirational sailor who passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at the age of 67 after a courageous battle with cancer. Known for his strength, humour, and unmistakable laugh, Mark was a dedicated father, cherished brother, and an integral part of both the Waikawa Boating Club and the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club.

A Life Celebrated at Sea and Beyond

Mark, son of Bill and Hazel Gibbs, leaves behind his beloved children Anna Williams and Sandy Gibbs, along with his siblings John Gibbs, Susan Ham, Brent Boyce, and Janet Fenemor. His impact on the sailing world and the hearts of those around him was immeasurable.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Instead, his family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate Mark’s life at a gathering:
When: Wednesday, January 22, 2025
Where: Queen Charlotte Yacht Club
Time: 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Guests are encouraged to bring a plate of food to share as stories and laughter honour Mark’s memory in a way he would have loved.

A Flotilla Tribute

In a heartfelt tribute to Mark, a flotilla of boats will gather on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 6:00 pm to honour his legacy on the water. The event will take place on the west side of the bay head, with participants looping around in a unified line and pausing in front of John Jackson’s house, where Anna and family will be watching from the balcony.

Sailors are asked to congregate by 6:00 pm and communicate via VHF, channel 77. This symbolic gesture of unity and remembrance will celebrate Mark’s love for the sea and his immense contributions to the community. For further details, please contact Marty at 027 275 0213 or Clive at 021 201 9883.

An Unforgettable Legacy

Mark’s dedication to his clubs and the sailing community left an indelible mark, inspiring countless sailors and fostering camaraderie on and off the water. His presence will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the hearts of all who knew him.
