With only four days to go until early bird registration closes for this year’s NZSFC Youth Nationals, it’s time to commit to what has to be the highlight of the April school holidays.
Running from April 12th to April 27th, this nationwide fishing competition is designed specifically for young anglers under 18. With support from fishing gear supplier, Daiwa New Zealand, and fishing clothing supplier, Just Another Fisherman, the event provides an incredible opportunity for kids to develop their fishing skills, enjoy time on the water, and compete for some amazing prizes.

You don’t have to be on a boat
I realise that it’s a strange thing to say for a boating magazine, but you don’t have to compete in a boat. You are also able to participate by fishing from the beach, rocks, or a jetty. You just have to have another person with you at all times. Makaira’s recent fishing competition highlights how exciting it can be to fish from a trailer boat, but larger boats create just as much excitement. For those on a boat, you can fish anywhere within 200 miles of the North Island or the South Island.
The competition follows an all-tackle, measure-and-release format with a line class points system, making it fair and exciting for all skill levels.
If you don’t have fishing gear, there’s a photography section, so you can get creative.
Here’s the details
Entries fees: only $5 per person

With such a low entry fee, this event is an excellent way to introduce young people to fishing without financial barriers.
