Built for New Zealand conditions

Whether you’re pushing a trailer boat through bar crossings, motoring into the backblocks of a South Island lake, or anchoring in a remote bay to head ashore hunting, safety is never far from mind. Mobile coverage fades quickly on the coast, and boaties know the frustration of being out of touch when you most need it. Garmin’s new fēnix 8 Pro aims to fill that gap – a premium smartwatch built for the outdoors, with satellite messaging and emergency SOS built in.

At 47mm, the carbon grey titanium model balances size and toughness. The sapphire lens shrugs off knocks on the coaming or scratches from tramping through scrub, while the AMOLED display stays crisp in bright sun. Water-rated to 10 ATM and dive-rated to 40 metres, it’s more than up to a swim, snorkel, or a quick spear dive off the boat.

Safety first: LTE and inReach

For Kiwi adventurers, the standout is inReach satellite technology. With a subscription, you can send and receive messages offshore or deep in the bush, trigger an interactive SOS to Garmin’s 24/7 coordination centre, and let family follow your progress with LiveTrack. Up to 50 nautical miles offshore, where phone coverage is patchy, this feature alone could be a lifesaver.

When closer to shore, LTE connectivity lets you make voice calls and texts without a phone in your pocket. Hunters heading inland by dinghy, or trampers dropped off on the Fiordland coast, can check in without worrying about leaving their smartphones behind.

Features for boaters and fishers

Garmin hasn’t forgotten the on-water details. The fēnix 8 Pro includes a tide widget, fish forecast, GPS navigation, and boat-friendly activity modes like fishing, boating, sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding and even wakeboarding. Pair it with other Garmin marine devices, and it doubles as a wearable remote for your trolling motor.

On the fitness side, you’ll find training metrics, recovery tools and health monitoring. But for most Kiwi boaties, it’s the practical tools – tide times at your wrist, weather forecasts via LTE, a built-in flashlight when you’re fumbling with an anchor light – that will be most appreciated.

Rugged endurance

Battery life is another strength. In smartwatch mode, expect up to 15 days, or 70 hours in GPS max mode. That’s more than enough for a week in the Sounds or a long hunting trip into the Kawekas. Even with LTE LiveTrack running, the watch can last up to 12 hours – a reassuring margin for offshore passages.

The titanium build keeps weight to just 77 grams, meaning it doesn’t feel heavy on the wrist during long days on the water. Leakproof buttons and a built-in microphone/speaker add practical durability.

More than a watch

The fēnix 8 Pro sits at the serious end of the smartwatch market. But for the boatie who uses their boat to open up hunting blocks, tramping trails, or offshore fishing grounds, it’s more than a luxury. It’s a communication tool, safety net, and navigation aid rolled into one.

For New Zealanders who push beyond cellphone coverage, that’s worth real peace of mind.
