The Ponsonby Cruising Club is gearing up for its annual Women’s Tuesday Night Series, with the first race of the spring kicking off on Tuesday 7 October at 1815. Designed to encourage more women into sailing, the format now allows crews of equal numbers of men and women – but with one key rule: a woman must helm the boat.
With only four boats entered so far, organisers are keen to see new owners and less-serious racers give it a go. “It’s a great way to get on the water without the pressure of the bigger race fleets,” one club member explained.
The series, which is open to all Keel Boats & Mullet Boats, is split into two blocks: five spring races (Oct 7, 21; Nov 4, 18; Dec 2, 2025) and five summer races (Jan 27; Feb 10, 24; Mar 10, 24, 2026). Entry is $200 for eight races if you’re a club member – and membership itself is inexpensive.
125 years of Ponsonby Cruising Club: Auckland’s mullet boats and maritime heart
Best of all? Most boats are practically guaranteed to sail away with a bottle of Ned Rosé as a prize, keeping the atmosphere light-hearted and fun.
The club is encouraging more entries to build the fleet. Whether you’re new to sailing, recently bought a boat, or simply want to join a friendly race series, this is one of the easiest ways to start.
