Hayden Whitburn joins Kiwi Yachting

From sails to sales – a lifelong sailor strengthens Kiwi Yachting’s national reach.

A seasoned sailor with deep industry roots

Kiwi Yachting has announced their latest appointment, of Hayden Whitburn as its newest Sales Representative, marking another step in the company’s ongoing expansion of service and support across the country.

Whitburn brings an impressive résumé, having spent 16 years with North Sails New Zealand, where he progressed from apprentice sailmaker to purchasing and sales manager, later becoming a partner in the business. His time there helped shape a detailed understanding of both the technical and personal aspects of New Zealand’s sailing community — from one-design racing to superyacht projects.

Beyond sailmaking, Whitburn’s experience spans sales management at Bic Sport NZ, overseeing RS Sailing distribution, and a range of coaching and event roles with Yachting New Zealand and the Russell Coutts Foundation. He’s coached youth teams internationally, managed regatta logistics, and built “learn-to-sail” programmes around the country — grounding his commercial expertise in the grassroots of the sport.

In announcing his move, Whitburn said he was “proud to be joining Kiwi Yachting” and looked forward to continuing the relationships that founders Richard & Isabel Macalister and Dean Barker have cultivated over the years.

“They’ve built an amazing business and strong relationships throughout New Zealand and overseas,” he said. “My goal is to continue those relationships and help grow the business even further.”

With more than two decades of industry experience, Whitburn is well-known among local sailors — from junior fleets to America’s Cup campaigns — for his hands-on approach, quiet diplomacy, and ability to connect people across the sport. His time as a Regional Support Officer at Yachting New Zealand and his long-standing links with clubs, coaches, and manufacturers give him a uniquely broad perspective on what New Zealand sailors need most.

Strengthening Kiwi Yachting’s nationwide reach

Kiwi Yachting Managing Director Richard Macalister said the appointment reflects the company’s commitment to growing both its retail and technical sales networks nationwide. Whitburn’s background aligns perfectly with Kiwi Yachting’s mission to deliver trusted advice, practical solutions, and genuine customer relationships — values the company has built over nearly four decades of service.

For Whitburn, the move represents a natural evolution from coaching and sailmaking to client relations and business development.

“It’s about helping boat owners and builders make the right choices — whether that’s fittings, systems, or sails — and supporting them long after the sale,” he said.

About Kiwi Yachting

Founded in 1988, Kiwi Yachting has grown from a specialist rigging and deck hardware supplier into one of New Zealand’s most respected marine companies, representing leading global brands across rigging, sail handling, and deck equipment. The addition of Whitburn reinforces that legacy and positions the company strongly for the busy summer season ahead.
