According to a report from Coromandel CFM, the vessel’s anchor chain broke while the yacht was at anchor, allowing it to drift ashore. The boat was subsequently beached and took on water once grounded. Authorities on scene have assessed the situation and advised that the yacht is unlikely to be recoverable.
No injuries were reported. The sole person onboard at the time was able to get ashore safely. Local residents assisted with salvaging personal items from the vessel, with those involved expressing thanks for the quick community support.
Coastguard New Zealand and the local harbourmaster attended the scene and are managing the response. Members of the public have been asked to stay well clear of the area to allow safe operations. A digger is understood to be on its way to assist with removal, timed to coincide with this afternoon’s low tide.
While the incident is isolated, it comes as a timely reminder. Weather forecasts point to a windy and unsettled week across much of the North Island, with blustery conditions extending nationwide. For boaties, now is the moment to double check your setup.
Anchors should be appropriate for the seabed, with sufficient chain and scope out. Shackles, pins, and swivels are all potential weak points and deserve close inspection. On moorings, check lines, chafe protection, and backup pendants. In marinas, cross tie your boat properly, allowing for wind shifts and surge, and ensure dock lines are in good condition.
A few minutes of preparation ahead of rough weather can make the difference between riding it out safely and watching your boat head for the beach.
