Black Cat Cruises has confirmed it has resumed normal operations, with its Akaroa Nature Cruise and Swimming with Dolphins experiences now running to schedule.
A tourist vessel operated by the company grounded and later capsized near Akaroa on Saturday, prompting the evacuation of more than 40 people in a serious marine incident.
The catamaran was returning from a wildlife sightseeing trip when it reportedly struck rocks near the harbour entrance. Passengers described feeling a sudden impact before the vessel began taking on water. With 41 people on board, including crew, the situation escalated quickly.
Crew initiated emergency procedures and assisted passengers into lifejackets as nearby commercial and recreational vessels responded. All passengers and crew were safely transferred to other boats and returned to Akaroa Wharf.
After the evacuation, the grounded vessel capsized close to shore and remains partially submerged. Salvage efforts have been complicated by the vessel settling onto rocks and by weather conditions, with an exclusion zone remaining in place. Authorities have also been monitoring potential environmental effects due to fuel and oils onboard.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has opened a formal investigation and is gathering information from crew, passengers, and witnesses. As with all such inquiries, findings will take time and early reports may change as evidence is reviewed.
The safe outcome reflects the value of clear emergency procedures and the rapid assistance provided by nearby vessels when things do not go to plan.
