The Auckland Boat Show opens on 5 March 2026 with amphibious technology firmly in the spotlight. But first, what is amphibious technology?
Amphibious technology refers to engineering that allows boats to operate seamlessly on both land and water via retractable wheels. Modern systems use electric motors or hydraulic drives to power wheels for beach launching, removing the need for trailers. In practical terms, it enables a boat to travel directly from a hardstand or garage into the sea.
Retractable wheel systems, often using a bow wheel and two transom wheels, lower for land travel and retract during water use. Power systems may be hydraulic, driven by pressurised fluid, or increasingly electric, using high-torque motors and control by wire steering.
Across coastal New Zealand, amphibious craft are now common. They are used on Waiheke Island, across the Coromandel, and by tourism operators who load passengers directly from beaches. Rescue and patrol agencies also rely on them for rapid response in areas without formal ramps.
This year, amphibious exhibitors are spread across the VEC and the outside stands.
Anura Amphibious Systems

Established in 2012, Anura set out to move amphibious technology forward. The New Zealand company develops high-performance systems for local and international boat builders. Their modular approach allows manufacturers to integrate amphibious capability into aluminium and fibreglass hulls without compromising ride quality.
Anura notes that the 2026 Auckland On Water Boat Show is positioning amphibious craft as a drawcard rather than a niche, reflective of how mainstream this segment has become.
Here’s an interesting story from Australia that showcases the capability of the Anura amphibious system.

Haines Hunter HQ, located outside at Stand OS6, will exhibit an Anura-equipped Haines Hunter model, reinforcing how established brands are now embracing amphibious integration.
Smuggler Marine
Outside, Stand OS4

This year Smuggler Marine marks 40 years of boatbuilding. The original business, David Pringle Boatbuilders, started in 1986, making 2026 its 40th year in boatbuilding. At the 2026 Auckland Boat Show Smuggler Marine will showcase its latest bow rider style amphibious craft. The West Auckland builder produces fibreglass RIBs, tenders and amphibious boats from five to eleven metres, with custom finishing options.
In an exciting move for those visiting the 2026 Auckland Boat Show, Smuggler Marine have indicated they will unveil new amphibious technology at the show, offering visitors a first look at its next phase of development.

Tectrax and electric amphibious drive
Outside, Stand OS22

It uses electric brushless motors rather than hydraulics, so there are fewer moving parts and generally less maintenance. Steering and wheel control are managed through a joystick and small display.
At OS22, Tectrax will also display the Boat Launcher, a remote-controlled amphibious trailer system designed to launch standard hulls without a tow vehicle.
This is a fascinating innovation and definitely worth checking out. Get a preview in our article below.

Flyfin Boats
Outside, Stand OS22

Sharing the outside stand OS22 with TecTrax, Flyfin Boats will present their new Flyfin Amphibious 750 Hard Top which uses the TecTrax amphibious system. They describe the 750 HTA as their flagship model which combines serious fishing capability with family-friendly features.

The Nautical Group and Iguana
Outside, Stand OS4B

The Nautical Group will display the Iguana Fisher, an amphibious fishing platform designed with livewell, insulated fish box, rod storage and a protective layout suited to offshore conditions. Built for fishing first, it retains amphibious capability for beach access and remote launching.

Electric drive, control by wire systems and modular integration now define the next generation of amphibious boats. What was once a curiosity has become part of New Zealand’s boating identity.
The 2026 Auckland Boat Show reflects that shift. Amphibious technology is no longer a sideshow. It is central to how a growing number of Kiwis access the water.
