Shellfish limits and intertidal closures on the table for Auckland and Coromandel shores

Fisheries New Zealand has opened a consultation on recreational shellfish harvesting along the Auckland and Coromandel coastlines. The review is driven by ongoing sustainability concerns in the area and forms part of the Hauraki Gulf Fisheries Plan.

The proposals range from full to partial. Option one prohibits all recreational take of shellfish and invertebrates from a defined intertidal zone. Option two is a partial closure, with exceptions allowing harvest of named species within daily limits. Options three and four follow the same full and partial closure structure, but add a combined daily limit of ten shellfish per person for any species not already covered by its own bag limit, applying outside the closure area across the entire Auckland Coromandel region.

The proposed closure area runs from the mean high-tide mark to 200 metres offshore along the mainland and Waiheke Island coastlines, taking in both intertidal and some subtidal habitat.

Feedback is also sought on monitoring and education initiatives to support implementation.
