Ocean racing legend Charlie Dalin passes away at 42

Written by

Elite French offshore sailor Charlie Dalin has died at the age of 42 following a private battle with gastrointestinal cancer. His family confirmed he passed away peacefully on Thursday, 11 June 2026.

Dalin’s passing comes less than a year after he stunned the sporting world by revealing he fought a rare, aggressive gastrointestinal stromal tumour during his triumphant 2024/25 Vendée Globe campaign. Diagnosed in autumn 2023, Dalin chose to keep his illness entirely secret from the public, his competitors. He relied on heavy daily immunotherapy treatments while enduring the brutal conditions of the non-stop, solo round-the-world race.

Against all medical odds, Dalin won the historic race in record-breaking time. He only officially revealed his secret health battle in October 2025 during the release of his bestselling autobiography, La Force du Destin (The Force of Destiny). Dalin stated he kept the secret because he wanted to be judged strictly as a competitor, not a patient.

Tributes are pouring in from across the global sailing community, praising his unmatched resilience, brilliant naval engineering mind, and fierce competitive spirit. He is survived by his partner and their young son.
