Staff, partners and volunteers from Yamaha Motor New Zealand swapped desks for gumboots this Yamaha Day, heading out to Rotoroa Island in the Hauraki Gulf to lend a hand with conservation work at one of the region’s most important wildlife sanctuaries.
Yamaha Day falls every year on 1 July, marking the day Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. was founded in 1955. This year’s milestone, the company’s 71st birthday, gave employees, dealers and partners around the world the opportunity to celebrate more than seven decades of innovation and performance across Yamaha’s marine, motorcycle and power products divisions. It also allowed local teams to support their communities, and the Rotoroa Island project was this year’s way of doing that. The day reflected 2026’s chosen theme, “Own the Moment, Take Action.”

The group travelled to the island aboard Auckland Sea Shuttles and a fleet of Yamaha powered vessels. From there, they traded their usual office routines for a day of physical, outdoor work.
Teaming up with the Rotoroa Island Trust, volunteers took on several restoration jobs: clearing overgrown vegetation, keeping the walking tracks in good order and controlling invasive pest plants. Their efforts help protect native plants and wildlife while preserving the sanctuary for future generations.

Alan Petrie, Senior Manager at Yamaha Motor New Zealand, says the annual event is about giving something back while strengthening the team. He explained:
“Yamaha Day gives our team the opportunity to step away from the office, work together in a completely different environment and contribute to projects that make a genuine difference. Rotoroa Island is an incredible place, and we’re proud to support the important conservation work being undertaken here.”

Volunteers also learned about Rotoroa Island’s transformation. Once home to a rehabilitation facility, Rotoroa has since become one of New Zealand’s standout conservation stories, with major habitat restoration work and several native species successfully reintroduced there.
Beyond the work completed on the island, the day reinforced Yamaha’s broader commitment to teamwork, sustainability and giving back to the communities it operates in.
