Toyota New Zealand marks 50 years of Hilux

Written by

Since arriving in New Zealand in 1976, the Hilux has become a trusted part of Kiwi life, used across farms, worksites and remote regions.

Marking 50 years in 2026, Toyota New Zealand highlights the Hilux’s long-standing reputation for toughness, reliability and durability. More than 135,000 Hilux vehicles are currently on NZ roads, many still in service after 15-plus years.

Assistant Vice President Susanne Hardy says the Hilux’s legacy is built on real-world performance and customer trust, with stories of longevity and dependability passed between generations. From its original 2WD petrol model to today’s range – including diesel, mild hybrid and new battery electric variants – the Hilux has evolved alongside changing customer needs while maintaining its core purpose.

Toyota says the Hilux continues to play a key role across New Zealand communities, supporting industries and livelihoods nationwide.
