Electric hydrofoiling is gaining momentum in Australia, with New Zealand marine technology company Vessev expanding into Sydney, Perth and Hobart.

Vessev has signed an agreement to supply multiple VS–12 electric hydrofoiling vessels for a planned Sydney Harbour transport network. The project aims to increase waterway transport capacity while reducing noise, emissions, wake and shoreline impact, supporting Sydney’s broader electrification goals.

The Sydney deal follows recent partnerships in Perth and Hobart, strengthening Australia’s position as a growing market for electric hydrofoiling transport.

Building on Vessev’s commercially operating VS–9 platform, the VS–12 uses carbon-fibre hydrofoils to lift the hull above the water, reducing drag and energy use while delivering a smoother, quieter ride with virtually no wake.

Vessev CEO Eric Laakmann said the technology could transform urban waterways by enabling smaller, more frequent and lower-impact transport services, similar to subway networks on land.

In Perth, VS–9 vessels are expected to operate on the Swan River through a partnership with the Enautic Group, initially targeting tourism. In Hobart, Vessev technology will support Fly Derwent, Australia’s largest planned electric hydrofoiling transit network.

The Sydney Harbour agreement highlights growing interest in hydrofoiling technology as Australian cities explore cleaner and more efficient urban mobility solutions.
