Night navigation is always a challenge. Even with good lights and a sharp lookout, hazards can appear without warning. The new FLIR Ocean Scout Pro helps skippers see what the eye cannot, detecting heat signatures from people, animals, floating debris, and navigation aids up to 500 metres away, even in total darkness.

Developed by FLIR Maritime in collaboration with professional mariners and law enforcement users, the Ocean Scout Pro is a compact, hand-held thermal camera built for tough marine conditions. It combines advanced thermal imaging with a simple, one-touch control system that makes operation instinctive, even in rough seas.

At the heart of the unit is a 640 × 480 thermal detector paired with a 32-degree field of view lens. This gives a wide and detailed image, allowing quick area sweeps and easier identification of heat sources such as buoys, moorings, or a person in the water. The Ocean Scout Pro offers four colour palettes to suit different lighting conditions: White Hot, Black Hot, Sepia, and Heat. The Heat mode highlights the warmest 10 percent of the image in bright orange and yellow, ideal for spotting people or pets overboard.

The camera is rated IP67 water resistant and has two metre drop protection, making it rugged enough for regular on board use. It operates for up to six hours on a single charge and can be powered via USB-C or power bank. At 500 grams, it is lightweight and pocket friendly, supplied with a compact pouch using the MOLLE modular mounting system for secure stowage.

For enclosed helms or wheelhouses, the Ocean Scout Pro can be mounted externally and stream live images via wireless video to an iOS device through the Scout Pro App. The app also allows recording and file transfer of still images and video for later review, a useful feature for documenting incidents or tracking conditions.

The device’s streamlined interface keeps the focus on the scene rather than menus. Users can adjust zoom, brightness, and standby mode with a single finger, ensuring uninterrupted viewing. A five year warranty underlines the manufacturer’s confidence in its durability.

The FLIR Ocean Scout Pro is available now through Lusty & Blundell’s nationwide dealer network. For recreational skippers, rescue volunteers, or commercial operators, it is a serious safety upgrade, and a tool that turns darkness into daylight and gives confidence to keep moving when the sun goes down.
