When it comes to safety at sea, visibility is everything — and Ocean Signal’s new EDF2 electronic digital flare makes sure you’re seen when it matters most. This cutting-edge distress signalling device uses multi-coloured LED technology to create one of the brightest and safest visual beacons available, designed to meet international safety standards while removing the hazards associated with traditional pyrotechnic flares.

Certified for international voyages by Maritime New Zealand and compliant with the US RTCM Standard 13200.0, the EDF2 can officially replace up to four red handheld flares under an International Voyage Certificate (IVC). That makes it a direct and approved alternative for offshore sailors, commercial operators, and recreational skippers who want a safer, cleaner, and more reliable emergency signal.

At its core, the EDF2 uses a multi-LED array capable of projecting a visible range of more than 8 nautical miles with a luminous angle of 180 degrees. It’s bright from every direction, boasting an effective light intensity exceeding 170 candela — and it runs for at least three hours, lasting up to 15 times longer than a traditional pyrotechnic flare.

Ocean Signal has also added a touch of technical brilliance to its design. The EDF2 emits the Morse Code signal for SOS using alternating red-orange and cyan LED flashes. The sequence begins with three red-orange flashes (S), followed by three cyan flashes (O), and finishes with three red-orange flashes (S). Simultaneously, an infrared (IR) light flashes the same SOS pattern, allowing search-and-rescue teams using night-vision goggles to detect the signal from even greater distances.

Built for real-world conditions, the EDF2 is fully buoyant, IP67 waterproof, and comes with a distress flag, mounting bracket, and user-replaceable CR123 lithium batteries. Compact and rugged, it’s an ideal addition to a grab bag, life raft, or emergency locker on any vessel — from coastal cruisers to offshore yachts.

Replacing flares no longer means sacrificing brightness or reliability. The Ocean Signal EDF2 is a leap forward in safe, smart distress signalling — the brightest choice you can make.
