Built in 1949 (although it is listed as built in 1955) by the renowned Nelson boatbuilders Curnow & Wilton, Santa Maria is a 13-metre (42.6ft) timber trawler that has gracefully transitioned from a rugged working vessel into a well-loved, character-rich liveaboard. With a sale price of NZD $135,000 and offered through Vining Marine, Santa Maria is a classic piece of New Zealand’s maritime heritage, maintained to a very high standard and ready for her next chapter.

Originally built to fish for hapuka and crayfish in the challenging waters of Cook Strait, Santa Maria was designed for strength, seaworthiness and endurance. Her robust construction and sea-kindly hull meant she was well-suited to the tough commercial demands of mid-century coastal fishing. Over time, the vessel also served in various capacities around the country, adding to her rich and varied history.

Around 20 years ago, Santa Maria was professionally converted into a liveaboard cruiser. The work was carried out with sensitivity to her original design, while enhancing comfort and functionality for modern use. The result is a boat full of charm, elegance and practical features that support full-time or extended living aboard.

The interior of Santa Maria is warm and welcoming, with a bright and airy saloon and galley that feel more like a home than a boat. The dining area cleverly converts to a double berth, and there’s also a large, private master cabin—ideal for liveaboard couples or long coastal adventures. The separate head is generous, featuring a flush toilet and full shower facilities.

Topside, her stern area is broad and uncluttered, offering full walk-around access—excellent for fishing, entertaining or simply soaking up the surroundings. The external timberwork, paint and varnish are in excellent condition, a testament to the current owners’ careful upkeep and ongoing love for the vessel.

Underway, Santa Maria is powered by a well-maintained Gardiner diesel engine, cruising comfortably at 8 knots. These engines are renowned for their reliability and longevity, complementing the vessel’s workboat origins.

As a liveaboard, coastal cruiser or unique weekend escape, Santa Maria offers a rare chance to own a piece of New Zealand’s boatbuilding legacy. Her lines, layout and condition make her stand out in any marina—she’s the kind of boat that turns heads and invites stories.
