At the Work Boat World Awards Volvo Penta’s diesel engines were the first choice for numerous award-winning vessels. This achievement was recognised with an award for Best Small Diesel Engine Supplier 2020.
Fuel efficiency and CO2 reduction is a key focus across Volvo Penta’s recently expanded, commercial marine product range. Volvo Penta’s ‘marine torque’ allows for great acceleration and maneuverability and – coupled with the high power to weight ratio – makes these engine popular.

In recent years there has been a global increase in cargo being shipped by water with a corresponding an increase in commercial shipping vessels. Volvo Penta’s president of Europe & Global Head Marine, Johan Inden believes this means increased growth and the need for more workboats globally – for marine and inland waterways.
“We believe customers in this segment will continue to seek high torque and efficient engines,” says Johan. “They need products that meet existing legislation like IMO Tier III, EPA, China 1, and EU Stage V – like our D13 engine with after-treatment.”

Short term, Volvo Penta is investing in reducing CO2 and other emissions in its current range of propulsion technologies. Alternative fuels and renewables have big potential. Mid-term, diesel-electric applications will become more feasible,with some applications already in the market. Longer term, Volvo Penta predicts electrification, powered by either significantly improved batteries or other environmentally friendly energy carriers, will increase significantly.
