Don’t Let Your Boat Be The One to ‘Get Away’ As Heavy Gails and Rainfall Are Forecast for New Zealand

Published

If you have a boat moored or you’re living on one, it’s important to pay attention to the weather reports this week. Significant gales and rain are on the way across New Zealand, and it looks like we’re in for a big downpour.

Starting Wednesday, we can expect a moist northeasterly flow. Nelson, Marlborough, and the Western District of the South Island will feel the brunt of it, with heavy rain warnings issued.

Thursday will see the most widespread impact. The Bay of Plenty, including Rotorua and northern Gisborne, is expecting heavy rainfall. In some areas, rain could exceed 100mm. This isn’t just a light shower; it could lead to localised flooding and rough seas. The rain is expected to continue through the weekend, so it’s time to prepare.

Areas like the Coromandel Peninsula, Taranaki, Taupo, Waikato, and Auckland may also be affected, along with lingering impacts in Nelson and Marlborough.

For boaties, this weather can be serious. Heavy rain will likely cause water levels to rise, which can affect how securely your boat is moored. Now is the time to check your mooring lines—make sure they’re tight and secure to avoid any surprises when the rain hits.

Don’t forget about the wind. We’re expecting gusty conditions that could create rough waves. If your boat isn’t properly secured, it could lead to some rocky situations. Take a moment to double-check that everything is in place and any loose items are safely stored away.

If you’re living onboard, it’s smart to have an emergency plan in case the weather worsens.

Preparing your boat and living space for the rain will help keep you and your vessel safe. Stay alert and safe boating, everyone!
