DOC seeks help to locate entangled dolphin near Auckland

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is calling on the public to help locate a bottlenose dolphin entangled in fishing netting, last seen in the waters around western Auckland.

The juvenile or subadult dolphin, accompanied by a fully grown dolphin, was first reported to DOC’s hotline on 29 December. Observed in the Western Waitematā Harbour, the entanglement is believed to be limiting its movement and ability to dive, posing a significant threat to its well-being.

DOC staff have been monitoring the dolphins near Riverhead and Herald Island. While the animals appear calm for now, DOC warns that immediate intervention is critical to prevent further harm.

A specialist marine mammal disentanglement team is being mobilised. However, the presence of the adult companion adds complexity to the rescue operation, requiring meticulous planning to ensure the safety of both dolphins.

How you can help

DOC is urging anyone who spots the entangled dolphin to:

  • Call 0800 DOC HOT (0800 36 24 68) immediately with details of the location and the dolphins’ behaviour.
  • Keep a safe distance and monitor without causing stress.
  • Avoid approaching or trying to assist the dolphin, as untrained intervention can endanger both the animal and the responder.

“It’s vital we locate this dolphin as soon as possible,” says Kirsty Prior, DOC Operations Manager. “The safety of the animal and those involved in the response is our top priority. Entangled marine mammals face severe risks, so careful planning is essential for a successful rescue.”

Entanglement in fishing gear and marine debris is an increasing danger for marine life. DOC urges all fishers and boaters to:

  • Minimise floating slack lines when setting fishing gear.
  • Dispose of old fishing gear and waste responsibly to prevent marine debris.

DOC’s marine mammal disentanglement team is trained to use internationally recognised methods to safely free animals. “We respond to one or two entanglements each year around New Zealand,” says Kirsty. “We have the expertise and equipment to act, but locating the animal is the crucial first step.”

Although disentanglement procedures are primarily designed for larger marine mammals like whales, DOC is prepared to adapt its approach for this dolphin. Equipped with specialist tools and adhering to strict safety protocols, the team is ready to intervene as soon as the dolphin is located.

The entangled dolphin was last sighted yesterday afternoon near the Huapai Golf Course at the edge of Waitematā Harbour.

If you see the dolphins, please call 0800 DOC HOT (0800 36 24 68) immediately, and provide as much information as possible about their location and behaviour.
