October has arrived and with it the opening of the 2025–26 freshwater trout season. The word from Fish & Game Reports could not be better — fat, healthy trout are being seen right across the country. For boating anglers, that is exactly the news you want to hear as the boat slips off the trailer and points toward a river mouth or lake inlet.
Read the water, play the edges
Early spring throws curveballs. Wind, showers, even a dusting of snow down south, and plenty of colour in the rivers. That is fine for boating anglers. Lakes and reservoirs keep fishing even when tributaries run dirty, and the edges come alive. Cruise the plume lines where a stream meets a lake, or sit off a river mouth and cast up into the seam.
Sea-run browns and rainbows are prowling the edges, so reach for smelt flies or soft baits that mimic baitfish. On the lakes, lead-line trolling in three to four metres has already produced rainbows, a brown, and even a tidy Chinook, with the warmer surface layer sitting around nine degrees. On bigger rivers like the Waitaki, boat anglers are finding fish stacked in slack water, behind points, and in swirling eddies. The formula is simple: master your boat control, then place the lure where the food gathers.
Access, regs, and the smart detour
Snow has closed a few back-country roads, and low water has stranded at least one ramp at Hāwea’s Neck. Check council alerts and have a Plan B launch site. Remember, many high-country rivers stay closed until 1 November, and Designated Waters need the extra endorsement. The win is that reservoirs, canals, and lower river reaches are wide open, fish are in condition, and the spring tide windows at estuaries can be magic from a boat.
Family days and safety first
Opening week is tailor-made for family missions. Kids’ licences under 12 are free, and put-and-take waters near towns offer easy wins in settled weather. On river mouths, wear a personal floatation device / lifejacket, keep the bow out of the break, and be wary stepping out to wade from the boat on slick stones. Fish & Game expects around 140,000 licences this season, with visiting anglers adding a welcome buzz to the ramps.
