Tectrax announces the Boat-Launcher’s new wireless joystick controller

A new wireless joystick brings intuitive control to TecTrax’s amphibious Boat-Launcher.

Just before Christmas 2025, Tectrax, New Zealand designers and builders of amphibious boat technology, unveiled a new wireless controller for their ground-breaking Boat-Launcher.

When Boating New Zealand caught up with Tectrax in mid 2025 for a first look at their new Boat-Launcher, the development team were using a prototype controller, with further design iterations underway. When asked about the direction of the control system, it was clear a joystick style interface was already on their minds.

We were not surprised. Joysticks have become the preferred interface for directing movement across many systems, including in the marine environment. Earlier in the year, Mercury Marine introduced joystick control for piloting single-engine outboards, reinforcing how widely accepted joystick control has become. When designed well, a joystick offers intuitive, low-effort control, acting as a natural extension of the operator’s hands rather than a seperate control unit.

Designed and built in-house, the Tectrax controller resembles a game controller but is engineered for marine use. It is ruggedly constructed and waterproof, both essential design considerations when using near water.

The wireless controller operates within a 500 metre range, giving plenty of freedom when manoeuvring into the launch zone. Battery life exceeds four hours between charges, and recharging is straightforward via a USB C port onboard.

The controller includes a built in display showing battery status, speed, and drive mode, providing the operator immediate feedback.

TecTrax continues to build momentum, and we are keen to see what new innovations emerge in 2026.
