The 580 Regal first appeared on the New Zealand boating scene under the Sea Nymph name. By the early 2000s, Sea Nymph was already an established local builder, with more than three decades of continuous production and a reputation for boats that handled rough water without complaint.
The first 580 Regal hull was launched in 2004. When Boating New Zealand tested the boat two years later, it was already earning favour as a capable family trailer boat with genuine offshore manners. The test was uncompromising. The boat was launched straight into Tasman Sea swell off Raglan and driven hard. The deep vee hull ran cleanly upwind, landed softly, and stayed composed through steep, short seas. Power was ample, the ride quiet, and the layout practical, with a balance of cockpit space and shelter that suited fishing, skiing, and family use.
A decade later, the same hull returned under a different badge. Sea Nymph had become Nereyda, but the 580 Regal remained in production. The second review focused less on punishment and more on everyday use. Updated screens, revised bowrails, refreshed seating, and modern engine options shifted the emphasis toward harbour running and family day boating. On the water, the fundamentals were unchanged. Early planing, predictable turns, and a dry ride still defined the boat.
The 580 Regal has outlasted branding cycles. The Regal 580 is no longer in production but are still favoured by many trailer boat enthusiasts.
