Los Gallos Spain won Race 3 of the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, crossing 8.1 seconds ahead of Emirates GBR with Team USA a further 12 seconds back. Spain won two races to GBR’s one.
All three boats started within two seconds of each other. GBR led at Mark 1, Spain and USA close. The gaps stayed tight through the first three marks. At the top of the course Spain went left, found more pressure, and came out ahead. The same move won them Race 2. USA split the same way trying to repeat it but found less wind and fell back to third. GBR closed in the final legs but dropped off the foils in a late manoeuvre and ran out of course.
Spain’s flight time across the day hit 96 percent. Diego Botin said the lack of warm-up made the early races hard, but the boat handling improved each race. The East River current ran consistently across the course, making mark roundings costly but offering little tactical variation.
Lighter winds are forecast for Sunday, with the full fleet expected on the water.
