Wellington-based New Zealand Boat Register, in partnership with One NZ, has launched AquaGPS – a GPS tracker that switches seamlessly between cellular and satellite connectivity, providing location tracking from driveway to up to 85 nautical miles offshore. AquaGPS automatically uses One
NZ’s 4G network when available and switches to satellite when out of range, ensuring continuous tracking without user input. Around 40% of New Zealand lacks cellular coverage, particularly in remote and coastal areas. AquaGPS uses One NZ Satellite (powered by Starlink) to provide affordable tracking where traditional devices fail.
The device integrates with the NZ Boat Register, linking location data to a digital ownership record. This helps identify assets, improve recovery, and share information with trusted contacts.
The device costs $399 with subscriptions starting at $22.99/month. While designed for boats, AquaGPS can also track vehicles, equipment, and outdoor gear in remote areas. NZ Boat Register provides a free nationwide platform for identifying and managing recreational watercraft, helping reduce loss and improve recovery outcomes.
