The American driver’s success came during a landmark weekend for the sport, one that saw the Kyrgyz Powerboating Federation and H2O Racing secure a multi-year agreement to keep the championship returning to the nation’s waters. Before Torrente had even crossed the finish line, the organisers were already negotiating the event’s future.

“Winning here, in a place where Formula 1 powerboat racing has never been contested before, is something special,” Torrente reflected after his victory. The sprint race win underscored his credentials at a circuit that demanded precision and bravery in equal measure.

Sunday’s main event capped a demanding weekend for the field. The sprint races on Saturday had already sorted the competitive order, with Jonas Andersson proving his speed across the opening contest. Rusty Wyatt, forced to start from the rear after an engine change in preparation, mounted an impressive recovery drive through the field.

The addition of Kyrgyzstan to the F1H2O calendar represents a significant expansion for the sport beyond its traditional European strongholds. The inland circuit, set on open water, presented unique challenges for the single-seat hydroplanes that regularly exceed 220 kilometres per hour. Navigation around the buoys, combined with variable water conditions and altitude factors, meant pilots had to adapt their usual tactics.

For Torrente, the victory provides momentum heading into the latter stages of the season. The American has long been a competitive presence at the highest levels of circuit powerboat racing, and this win confirms his status among the championship’s leading contenders.

The agreement between the Kyrgyz federation and H2O Racing signals confidence in the sport’s ability to grow beyond its established markets. Officials from both organisations saw the inaugural running as a success, laying the groundwork for what they hope will become a permanent fixture on the calendar.

The technical demands placed on teams and drivers at this new venue were considerable. Crews had to manage their boats through conditions they’d never encountered before, while pilots learned a circuit from scratch during practice and qualification. That Torrente emerged victorious under these circumstances speaks to both his talent and the preparation his team invested in understanding the track.

For New Zealand fans of Formula 1 powerboating, the expansion of the championship to new territories offers fresh interest in a sport that continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible on water. The speeds, the precision required, and the unforgiving nature of racing hydroplanes on open circuits remains unmatched in the motorsport world.
