Tasmania’s boating community has gained a new champion for luxury offshore cruising with the appointment of Boat Sales Tasmania as Maritimo’s official sales consultant in the state. Based at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania in Sandy Bay, the dealership is headed by Matthew and Alex Johnston, who took over the established business in May 2025.

The timing marks a natural fit for the Australian motor yacht builder. Tasmania’s 31,000 registered boat owners operate in some of the Southern Ocean’s most demanding waters, where seaworthiness and reliability aren’t optional. Maritimo’s reputation for robust bluewater vessels and shaft-drive engineering aligns with what Tasmanian boaties know they need.

Matthew Johnston brings substantial pedigree to the role. His background includes stints as Managing Director of Muir Windlasses Australia and Executive General Manager, Marine at TasPorts. He’s also a past Commodore of the Royal Yacht Club and accomplished offshore sailor, giving him genuine credibility in local boating circles. “Maritimo is the ideal fit for Tasmania, where we have a rugged, often treacherous coastline,” Matthew said. “Their motor yachts are renowned as robust, bluewater vessels, while their shaft-drive engineering and propulsion technology appeal to Tasmanians for their durability and ease of maintenance.”

Maritimo founder Bill Barry-Cotter welcomed the appointment. “Both companies share the ethos of precision and pride in Australian-made quality and innovation,” he said. “Over the years, I have come to know Matthew and Alex and respect their commitment to these values and their passion for boating.”

The dealership inherits a business established in 1988, previously representing Jeanneau and Grand Inflatable Boats. Boat Sales Tasmania now occupies a prominent position on the marina at the Royal Yacht Club, where Maritimo digital displays have already been installed.

Danny Jordin, Maritimo’s Australasian Sales Manager, sees genuine opportunity in the appointment. “Matthew and Alex have built on a very good business over the past 18 months and they have a great location. Tassie is renowned for its amazing boating, and we believe there are many opportunities for Maritimo.”

Matthew notes that Tasmanian owners tend to be experienced and know exactly what they want. The state also attracts visiting boat owners from across Australia who base vessels here seasonally to explore Tasmania’s remote coastline and waterways.
An Open Day is planned for November, with Boat Sales Tasmania also attending the 2027 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Matthew is particularly keen to see what new models Maritimo has in the pipeline.
