Boaties crossing the Mangawhai bar can now use dedicated VHF Channel 74 to log trip reports and request help if needed. The new channel provides coverage across the inlet and bar, improving safety at one of Northland’s higher-risk bar crossings where VHF coverage was previously limited.
Based at the Mangawhai Boating & Fishing Club, the system supports the newly-established Coastguard Mangawhai unit and is monitored 24/7 by Coastguard’s National Operations Centre. Coastguard Mangawhai’s rescue vessel also monitors the channel when crewed.
Coastguard says the channel offers a simple, reliable way for boaties to report bar crossings and helps volunteers respond more quickly in emergencies. Local Coastguard representatives say it is an important addition for the area, given the well-known risks of the Mangawhai bar.

The launch follows Coastguard Mangawhai’s official recognition as a Coastguard unit in April 2026. Boaties are encouraged to use VHF 74 before heading out and to carry two waterproof ways to call for help, wear lifejackets, and keep at least one communication device on their person.
