The New Zealand Builders Plate (NZBP) and New Zealand Vessel Register (NZVR) will operate together, with every NZBP-issued vessel receiving a permanent digital record on the NZVR. The register captures design and construction data, then accumulates inspection, service, repair and modification information throughout the boat’s life.
The NZBP scheme, backed by accredited surveyors and naval architects, creates a conformance pathway for recreational vessels up to 24 metres—whether new, imported or existing—to carry a New Zealand-backed mark showing compliance with recognised global vessel standards. Standards cover structural integrity, sea handling, maximum load and engine capacity.
Conformance requires independent verification that design meets standards and that construction follows that design. The NZVR then maintains the vessel’s documented history, accessible for maintenance, sale or insurance purposes.
Owners need not hold an NZBP to use the NZVR. Any boat, trailer and engine can be registered now, with optional bundled inspection or insurance survey.
Vessels already carrying overseas marks – Australian Builders Plate, European CE, or US NMMA certification—can seek mutual recognition through the NZBP. Existing evidence is accepted where valid, with targeted assessment where information gaps exist. Assessors can also evaluate whether earlier evidence remains valid after repowering or modification.
Together, the schemes link a vessel’s technical history to its identity for the first time in New Zealand, from construction records through to repairs and modifications. Further detail is available at buildersplate.nz and vesselregister.nz.
