ROCKWOOL Racing Strengthens Line-Up With SailGP Champion Ed Powys

In a significant move ahead of the new SailGP season, ROCKWOOL Racing has bolstered its roster with the signing of Ed Powys, a key member of the Australia SailGP Team and a three-time SailGP champion. This high-profile transfer adds proven experience and depth to the Danish team as they gear up for the 2025 season opener in Dubai on 23-24 November.

Powys Brings Championship Pedigree

Powys, a British athlete with dual British and Australian roots, has been a pivotal figure in the Australia SailGP Team’s dominance since Season 2. During his tenure, he played a critical role in the team’s historic three-peat SailGP championship victories. Now, Powys is ready to bring his expertise to ROCKWOOL Racing, marking a fresh chapter in his professional sailing career.

“I’m really excited to start this new chapter with ROCKWOOL Racing,” Powys said. “This is a strong team and a contender at every event. Every time you go on the water, you know the ROCKWOOL team is going to bring their game. I think they are real challengers for the season.”

A Strategic Addition

ROCKWOOL Racing driver Nicolai Sehested is thrilled about the addition of Powys, calling it a strategic move to elevate the team’s performance.

“Ed is one of the most versatile athletes in SailGP, and he brings us vital experience and depth for the coming season,” Sehested said. “It’s a real coup to steal someone of Ed’s ability from one of our key rivals this close to the new season – and we’re delighted to welcome him to the ROCKWOOL Racing team.”

Building a Winning Formula

The addition of Powys follows ROCKWOOL Racing’s recent announcement of new coach Francesco Bruni, a seasoned professional with extensive experience at the top level of sailing. Sehested believes the combined influence of Powys and Bruni will give the team a competitive edge.

“Both Ed and Checco have been around the top level of the sport for a long time and are proven winners,” Sehested said. “They’re exactly the kind of profile to help us go to the next level and challenge for the SailGP championship.”

A Bittersweet Departure

Leaving the Australia SailGP Team was not an easy decision for Powys, who described his time with the team as immensely rewarding.

“I had three great years with Australia SailGP Team, so there are mixed emotions when it’s time to leave,” he admitted. “But when Nicolai called, I knew straight away that this was a challenge I wanted to jump on. I’m excited, and I’m ready to get going.”

Tom Slingsby, driver and CEO of the Australia SailGP Team, expressed his support for Powys’s move, highlighting the significance of this new opportunity for the seasoned sailor.

“Ed’s move to ROCKWOOL Racing is a fantastic opportunity for him to be in a starting role racing on the F50, and while we are sad to see him leave, we fully support his decision,” Slingsby said. “He’s been an integral part of our team over the last two seasons, and we are grateful for all he has done to support our success. We know he’s going to be a massive asset to the Danish team, and we wish him all the best.”

Looking Ahead

With just days until the new SailGP season kicks off, Powys is focused on settling into his new role and contributing to ROCKWOOL Racing’s ambitious goals.

“The goal for me personally is to settle in and integrate as quickly as possible,” he said. “I know a lot of the sailors already, and it’s a great group. The team is already performing on the water, and I know they have high expectations. Hopefully, I can do my bit to help achieve those aims, and we can have a great year.”

As ROCKWOOL Racing sets its sights on SailGP glory, the addition of Ed Powys signals their commitment to reaching the top of the leaderboard. With a strong roster, seasoned leadership, and fresh talent, the Danish team is poised to make waves in the coming season.
