A Wave of Triumph: Four Skippers Cross the Finish Line in Style

Celebrating the highs and challenges of the Vendée Globe’s 10th edition

Les Sables d’Olonne came alive with roaring crowds as four exceptional skippers completed their Vendée Globe journey, delivering a stunning showcase of resilience, talent, and determination. This wave of arrivals reflects the sheer calibre of the sailors competing in this iconic 10th edition of the solo, non-stop, and unassisted round-the-world yacht race.

Among the quartet was Sweden’s Niklas Lundven, who achieved an impressive sixth-place finish in his first-ever Vendée Globe. Lundven’s journey was a testament to his skill and determination as he navigated challenges while engaging in a thrilling side-by-side race with French rival Jeremy.

“I’ve accomplished my mission, job done. It was a solid performance. I fought hard all the way through, and I had a blast,” Lundven said, beaming with pride.

The Swedish skipper’s debut performance adds him to the growing list of first-timers who have made their mark on the Vendée Globe, proving that preparation, focus, and a touch of daring can lead to incredible results.

Thomas Ruyant: Battling Among the Best

French skipper Thomas Ruyant followed close behind in seventh place, sailing his yacht Vulnerable to a finish that highlighted his exceptional ability to adapt and persevere. As one of the pre-race favourites, Ruyant faced several unforeseen challenges but never wavered in his determination to stay in contention.

“My initial goal was to play with the frontrunners and aim for the top positions. I don’t think there’s anything to regret—that’s what makes this race so special,” he reflected.

Despite the setbacks, Ruyant maintained his intensity and focus, earning the admiration of fans and competitors alike.

Justine Mettraux: Breaking Barriers

Swiss sailor Justine Mettraux not only claimed eighth place but also made history as the first female skipper and international competitor to cross the finish line in this edition. Her achievement underscores the growing inclusivity and diversity within the world of offshore racing.

“It was intense. The weather sometimes allowed me to catch up, and it’s great to finish so close to the pack, sailing among them,” Mettraux said.

Mettraux’s performance was characterised by tenacity and tactical brilliance, earning her accolades as a trailblazer in this challenging sport.

Sam Goodchild: A Memorable Top-Ten Finish

Rounding out the day’s arrivals was British skipper Sam Goodchild, who secured a top-ten finish on his yacht Vulnerable, alongside teammate Thomas Ruyant. Goodchild’s approach was refreshingly simple: to finish the race and enjoy every moment of the journey.

“When I left, my goal was first to finish, then to have fun—and I had a blast. Mission accomplished, so I’m happy,” he shared.

Goodchild’s infectious enthusiasm and steady performance throughout the race have made him a favourite among fans and a respected competitor on the global stage.

The Bigger Picture

The Vendée Globe’s 10th edition continues to demonstrate why it holds a revered place in the world of sailing. The combination of gruelling challenges, unpredictable weather, and razor-sharp competition has created a race for the ages.

This wave of arrivals not only highlights the skill and grit of these sailors but also encapsulates the spirit of the Vendée Globe: a race where the journey is as meaningful as the destination.

Looking Ahead

As the fleet continues to cross the finish line, each skipper’s story adds another layer to the rich tapestry of this edition. From historic firsts to personal triumphs, the Vendée Globe remains a showcase of human endeavour at its finest.

For New Zealand’s sailing community, these stories serve as inspiration and a reminder of the incredible feats that are possible when passion meets preparation.
