The search for a fisherman missing off the rocks at Tapotupotu Bay, near Cape Reinga, is resuming this morning after crews worked into the night without success.

Emergency services were called around 3.20pm yesterday after the man was swept into the water while fishing with friends in the remote bay on Northland’s east coast.

Detective Sergeant Paul Overton, Northland Police Search and Rescue Team Leader, said the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched immediately, with multiple agencies joining the search as conditions allowed.

Police teams worked alongside Search and Rescue, Northland Coastguard Air Patrol, Customs, Surf Lifesaving, and the Northern Rescue Helicopter, covering the coastline and offshore areas until darkness forced operations to pause.

“This is a particularly remote area and crews searched into the night, however the man was not located,” Overton said.

Search teams are returning to the water this morning to continue the effort.

Overton thanked everyone involved, noting the strong community response:

“I would like to thank all the agencies that have been involved in the search so far, as well as the locals in the area who have made themselves available to assist – it’s very appreciated.”

Police say updates will follow as further information becomes available.
