Earthling E 40 to attend International Multihull Show 2026

New Zealand’s Earthling E 40 hybrid powercat will attend the International Multihull Show 2026 in La Grande Motte, marking the French show debut of a vessel that takes a systems led approach to hybrid electric boating rather than a concept driven one.

Designed and developed by New Zealand engineer John McGettigan, Earthling E 40 represents a highly integrated combination of electric propulsion, solar generation, and low consumption diesel charging within a lightweight multihull platform. The project builds on McGettigan’s background in automated industrial systems and earlier high performance multihull development, applying that experience to practical coastal and island cruising.

The 12 metre powercat is powered by twin Molabo electric motors drawing energy from a 45 kWh lithium battery system. Energy input is supported by a large coachroof mounted solar array and twin Whisperpower DC charge generators. This hybrid configuration allows electric only operation for harbour use and short coastal passages, while the generators provide efficient passage making at around 10 knots using approximately 2.5 litres of diesel per hour combined. The system is configured with full redundancy, low noise output, and minimal vibration, enabling near silent operation at anchor.

Earthling E 40 is built on fine, efficient hulls derived from the Stealth 36 platform. Constructed using lightweight composite materials, the vessel weighs approximately 3.6 tonnes, contributing to low energy demand and extended range at moderate speeds. All propulsion, energy, and onboard systems are monitored and controlled through a proprietary digital interface, providing real time oversight and simplified operation.

Earthling’s attendance at the International Multihull Show comes as hybrid and electric propulsion systems continue to gain visibility within the multihull sector. Rather than focusing on outright speed or headline performance figures, the E 40 presents a practical case study in efficiency driven design, reduced emissions, and integrated energy management suited to real world cruising use.
